Native American Heritage
Long before Idaho Falls became a city, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Shoshone-Bannock and the NezPerce. These tribes lived off the land, hunting and fishing in the region’s abundant natural resources. The Snake River, which flows through Idaho Falls,was a vital source of life and played a central role in their daily existence.
Early Settlers and the Founding of Idaho Falls
The arrival of European settlers in the mid-19th century marked the beginning of a new era for the region. In 1864, the first settlers established a small community near the Snake River, drawn by the promise of fertile land and abundant water. The town was initially named "Riverside" but was later renamed "Idaho Falls" after the picturesque waterfalls along the Snake River.
The city’s early growth was fueled by agriculture, as settlers took advantage of the fertile soil and ample water supply to establishfarms and ranches. The completion of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1884 further spurred development, connecting Idaho Falls to major markets and facilitating trade.
The 20th Century: Growth and Modernization
As the 20th century dawned, Idaho Falls continued to grow and evolve. The construction of the Idaho Falls Power Plant in 1909 marked a significant milestone, providing the city with electricity and paving the way for future industrial and commercial development. This project was crucial in supporting the city's expansion and modernizing its infrastructure.
During World War II, Idaho Falls played a key role in the war effort as the site of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The lab was established to conduct research on nuclear energy and played a vital role in the development of nuclear technology. The presence of the INL brought new economic opportunities and increased the city's prominence on the national stage.
Post-War Expansion and Modern Development
Following World War II, Idaho Falls experienced a period of rapid growth and development. The city saw an increase in population and the expansion of residential and commercial areas. New schools, hospitals, and recreational facilities were established to meet the needs of the growing community.
